Awamu Biomass Energy

Awamu Biomass Energy is a pioneer commercial manufacturer of TLUD gasifier cookstoves in Uganda and East Africa. We are a social enterprise formed in 2012 with the aim of manufacturing and distributing clean and affordable gasifier cookstoves for rural and peri-urban households.

Awamu was inspired by the idea of working with local stakeholders to promote a low cost, locally produced and highly efficient clean cooking solution for the less privileged communities in Uganda.  The company was started to continue the work of the World Bank-funded BEIA (Biomass Energy Initiative in Africa) project that promoted TLUD gasifier stoves throughout Uganda in 2011.  The project was implemented by the Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) and concluded that there was market for TLUD gasifeir stoves in Uganda.

We target households in mainly rural and peri-urban settings that still have access to biomass (like twigs, maize cobs, “waste” wood, bamboo, carpentry  off-cuts, etc) but exclusively use the 3-stone for cooking.
